WHAT IS AN AIR SOURCE HEAT PUMP
An air source heat pump is a low-carbon, renewable heat source and an alternative heating system to conventional gas or oil boilers that suits a wide range of homes. They extract thermal energy from the air to provide heating and hot water for your home or business premises.
Benefits Of Air Source Heat Pumps
- Low carbon, environmentally friendly heat source
- Highly efficient: returns around 3–4 kW of heat for every 1 kW of electricity used
- Can provide active cooling, saving space and cost vs a separate AC system
- Works for most homes; little outdoor space required
- Quick to install, low maintenance, 15–20 year lifespan
- Combustion-free and powered entirely by electricity
- Eligible for the Government Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)
HOW DOES AN AIR SOURCE HEAT PUMP WORK?
Air source heat pumps work like a fridge in reverse, collecting energy from outside air even at low temperatures. The cycle has four key stages:
Energy is absorbed from the air by the fan and passed over a heat exchanger. Refrigerant in the exchanger warms and changes from liquid to vapour.
The vapour refrigerant is compressed, raising its temperature so it is ready to distribute heat around your heating system.
Heat energy is released into the water used in your heating and hot water system.
The cooled refrigerant turns back into a liquid and the cycle repeats.
